World Health Organization provides emergency medical supplies to flood-affected Benghazi

Introduction

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced today, Saturday, that they have delivered tons of medical supplies to the Libyan city of Benghazi from Dubai. This emergency response aims to provide relief to the unprecedented floods in eastern Libya.

Assistance for 250,000 people

According to WHO, the assistance is expected to reach approximately 250,000 people. It includes essential medicines, trauma supplies, emergency surgery and medical equipment. Additionally, the organization has provided bags for the safe and dignified transport of bodies.

Ongoing efforts to trace the dead and missing

WHO is working with the Libyan Ministry of Health to trace the dead and missing individuals. Currently, over 9,000 people are still missing in Derna. So far, 3,958 bodies have been recovered, identified and named. The organization expects this number to increase as they continue their efforts.

A disaster of epic proportions

Dr. Ahmed Zuiten, the WHO representative in Libya, described the situation as a “disaster of epic proportions.” He expressed sadness over the loss of thousands of lives and extended his condolences to the families affected. WHO is committed to providing the necessary support to restore health services in eastern Libya.

Second delivery of supplies

The recent delivery of 130 cubic meters of supplies is the second shipment from WHO. The first shipment included 29 metric tons of essential medical supplies from the organization’s emergency stockpiles in Libya.

Hurricane Daniel struck last week, resulting in the tragic loss of over 5,000 lives and leaving many individuals still missing.
