Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador made a splash after he published a picture that he said “depicts the legendary forest dwarf from Mayan folklore”, stressing that it is evidence of the existence of this creature in reality.
According to traditional Mayan belief, the Alux are mischievous little creatures that live in forests and fields and have a tendency to trick people or hide things.
Some in Mexico believe in the existence of these creatures to the point of leaving “gifts” for them to appease them.
One of the photos in the post shows stone carvings from a Yucatec Maya archaeological site, while another is a nighttime shot of what looks like a creature in a tree with glowing eyes.

The Mexican president’s tweet drew derision on Twitter, with one commenting that the picture showed a raccoon with a sack over its head.
It’s a raccoon with a bag on its head.
