Security guards at London’s Heathrow Airport have launched a 10-day strike over the Easter weekend, the latest in a series of strikes that have affected the UK.

Unite Union said more than 1,400 security guards working at Heathrow, one of Europe’s busiest airports, will strike from March 31 until Easter Sunday, April 9, demanding higher wages.

The union added that the strikers included security guards working at the airport’s Terminal 5, which is used exclusively by British Airways, in addition to those responsible for checking all goods entering the airport, the Associated Press reported.

The strikes will coincide with the two-week Easter school holidays, traditionally the best time to travel for many in Britain.

The union stressed that workers are forced to take action because they cannot make ends meet as the cost of living crisis continues to affect millions of Britons.

Heathrow proposed a 10% increase in fares, but the union said it was not enough amid soaring inflation and after years of wage freezes.

“Workers at Heathrow are underpaid while the chief executive and senior managers are getting huge salaries,” said Sharon Graham, the union’s general secretary.

Inflation in the UK rose sharply last year to 11.1% in October, although it fell to 10.1% in January.

This is still the highest in almost 40 years and a sharp change after several years of 2% inflation.

Tens of thousands of teachers, doctors, health workers, train drivers and civil servants have gone on strike in recent months demanding higher wages.

Union leaders representing nurses and ambulance crews have reached a pay deal with the British government, but many other industries are still in bitter disputes with the authorities.

Heathrow stated that it had contingency plans in place to keep the airport open and operational.
