Polish President Andrzej Duda expressed hope that Ukraine will be invited to join NATO during the upcoming NATO summit in Washington.
Historic Invitation for Ukraine
President Duda stated that he hopes the Washington summit will mark a historic occasion by extending an invitation to Ukraine. As the United States’ largest and strongest ally, he believes they will make every effort to ensure this anniversary summit has a significant impact on decision-making.
Responding to the Will of Ukraine
Duda emphasized that inviting Ukraine to join the alliance would be the most historic decision, demonstrating NATO’s commitment to the desires of the Ukrainian community. He believes it would also uphold the core values of NATO.
Current Challenges
However, Duda acknowledged that military operations taking place in Ukraine prevent immediate discussions regarding its NATO membership.
NATO’s Support Package for Ukraine
During the NATO summit in Vilnius, alliance leaders agreed on a multi-year support package for Ukraine. This plan aims to enhance interoperability with NATO and establish the NATO-Ukraine Council. Additionally, the condition of the Membership Action Plan has been removed to streamline the accession process.
