Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard has said his country is ready to grant asylum to isolated Peruvian President Pedro Castillo, but has yet to receive a single request to do so.
“As far as I know, no,” Ebrard said in an interview with the Mexican Radio Formula, in response to a question about whether Castillo applied to the Mexican authorities for asylum.
He continued: “We take a positive stance on asylum, but no one has submitted this request. I don’t think we’ll mind if he asks us and we can look at it positively.”
This comes after the US State Department announced that it rejects any “threat to the democratic system” in Peru, noting that the United States is closely monitoring the situation in Peru and we are in contact with regional governments.
Notably, the Peruvian parliament sacked President Pedro Castillo on Wednesday after his attempt to dissolve the parliament and declare a state of emergency in the country.
The prosecutor’s office of Peru accused Castillo of exceeding his powers and attempting a coup d’état. The police arrested him.
