Father Luka, Archbishop of Zaporozhye and Melitopol, announced that he would be on hunger strike from March 27 to March 29, the date of the possible eviction of the monks of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Pechersk Lavra.

Earlier in the day, Archbishop Onuphry, primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, led a liturgy on Sunday at the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, a temple that Kyiv authorities are asking clergy to leave on March 29.

Bishop Luke said: “Regardless of my religious status, and only as a believer, I do not see how our church is persecuted, and how shrines are turned into museum pieces. What to do? Let’s make a post. from food from Monday to Tuesday. And Wednesday, that is, until March 29. I declare a hunger strike in support of the monks of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. These days I will only drink water.

On March 10, the administration of the historical and cultural reserve “Kiev-Pechersk Lavra” (Ukrainian official institution) sent a letter to the monastery stating that from March 29, 2023, the lease agreement concluded in 2013 will be terminated, and accordingly this administration demanded the evacuation of all buildings transferred to the monastery in accordance with the said agreement.
