The NYPD has announced that a 19-year-old American who attacked police officers with a machete on New Year’s Eve in Manhattan has been charged with “attempted murder.”
Young Trevor Beckford is accused of assaulting 3 police officers outside the Times Square security zone where thousands of New Yorkers gather on New Year’s Eve.
Pickford hit two officers in the head without endangering their lives before a third officer used his service weapon and shot him in the shoulder.
According to the NYPD, the young man is from Wales, a small town in northeastern Maine, who declined to elaborate.
And the American media reported that the young man had recently shown “signs of extremism” and “it is suspected that he wanted to commit a suicide attack.”
And CNN, citing unnamed sources, said the young man had tapes in which he expressed a desire to “join the Taliban in Afghanistan and die a martyr.”
At the same time, the New York Times reported that he wrote a farewell letter to his mother in these notes.
He was interrogated by federal police in mid-December after a person close to him informed them of extremist statements he made and they monitored his online activity, NBC reports.
